A few days ago, the JTU released results for a survey completed by 68 triathlon race organizers across 33 prefectures. The responses are based on last year (2023) and in Japanese.
www.jtu.or.jp/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/About-the-swim-environment_vfix.pdf Honestly speaking, there is nothing mind-blowing about the information presented - it's simply a compilation and breakdown of factual information pertaining to topics about the swim leg. However, it's interesting to see how triathlons vary across the nation. Questions included availability of 'swim skip' and swim warm-up, implementation (or not) of a time limit implementation, the number of swim laps, when and where the swim leg takes place, average water temperature at swim venues, type of swim start, and whether a wetsuit is mandatory or not (and why or why not), etc. Some 'fun facts' from the 68 triathlon race organizer respondents: ・ Starts: 21% mass, 29% rolling, 50% wave ・ Wetsuits: 65% mandatory in Standard, Sprint; 67% mandatory in Middle or longer ・ Go or No Go: Of the 68 triathlons, only 2 cancelled the swim and both were in July; 1 in September for some unknown reason did not have the swim ・ Get Lapped: 71% of the 68 triathlons had 2 swim laps; 19% had 3 or more laps ・Time's Up: 90% of triathlons have a time limit; races without a time limit largely cite the lack of time limit due to a short swim distance and as a means of encouraging beginners ・Hot in Here: 40% of triathlons in August report the temperatures between 30 to 35 centigrade at race start

Ever since this race was announced, everybody has a lot of questions.
And for good reason. The information provided on the IRONMAN website is limited - there's no real course map, the travel and logistics details are sparse, and at this point, race day is less than three months away. Below, we've wrapped up what we know about the race:
The most frequently asked questions at Japan Multisport centers on races and sports events. In particular, folks are very interested in the middle to long distance races in Japan. Below is a comprehensive list of triathlons in Japan longer than Standard/Olympic Distance.
Keep in mind that many (but not all!) triathlons require Japan Triathlon Union (JTU) membership to participate. JTU membership is only available to residents of Japan. Whatever your circumstances are, contact us if you'd like to learn more about racing in Japan. |
