As tradition dictates, Okinawa is ready to kick off the 2023 triathlon season in Japan. What used to be a full distance race has been shortened for a variety of factors, including a lack of volunteers and resources, as well as the desire to limit the movement of triathletes around the island. No doubt the combination of a lot of elderly residents on the island, limited medical facilities, and the lingering effects of the pandemic can't be swept under the rug. But that won't stop them from slapping on a hefty price tag of 50,000 JPY :-) Ishigaki is such a mainstay, do we even talk about this? I haven't returned since they called off the race in 2018 while I was shivering in my wetsuit. The weather can be dodgy, but hey, you're in Okinawa, so you can't really complain.
